Forget About Compatibility This Year

Compatibility is the idea that certain zodiac signs are more likely to have successful romantic relationships. For example, if something doesn’t work out with a significant other, you might think to yourself, “Well, no wonder-he was a Gemini!” Or if you do find yourself falling head over heels for someone, you might check out his birth chart and think, “Wow, he’s a Scorpio-well, that means we’re meant to be!” Astrology can seem like a very useful tool when it comes to navigating romantic relationships or even friendships. You might think of it as a kind of cheat sheet to figuring out who you’re really meant to be with. But it’s time for a new perspective.

It’s time to leave astrological compatibility back in 2016. That’s right-stop checking his horoscope before a date, and stop wondering if things will just never work out with a Capricorn. Here’s why it’s time to forget about compatibility:

  1. It holds you back from meeting people who you might actually like.

Looking up your astrological compatibility with someone can blind you to their good qualities-or even their bad qualities. For example, if you look up your compatibility with someone and see that according to your zodiac signs, you’re supposed to be a match, you might automatically expect them to be good for you. And because you already think they’re the one, you might ignore their bad qualities when they start revealing another side. This can end up being really dangerous, and you shouldn’t judge people ahead of time.

  1. You could end up stereotyping people.

Yes, some people might use the excuse of, “But all stereotypes are based in truth!” Well, stereotyping is still bad. You don’t really know someone until you know them, so why stereotype them ahead of time? For example, you might meet a guy and find out he’s a Capricorn, and then assume that he won’t have time for you because he might be too committed to his job. Or you might meet a guy who’s a Pisces and wonder if he’ll be too emotional and sensitive for you. But what if they don’t really fir the description of their sign? You just never know, so it’s best to keep an open mind!

  1. You can’t really put people in a box based on their zodiac sign.

Yes, astrology is a lot of fun, and yes, even people who aren’t super into astrology have observed its influence-for example, lots of people feel like Mercury retrograde throws them off, or the full moon drives them a little crazy. But at the end of the day, we can’t plan our whole lives to revolve around astrology. We might never meet the perfect person according to our birth chart. We need to take chances and be open minded no matter who we meet and connect with! Plus, there is so much more to astrology than someone’s zodiac sign. It’s a fun tool, but you should never use it to dictate your whole life.
